A guy named Bob McDonnell is listed on the sex offender register.
Of course it is not Attorney General Bob McDonnell, but this points out how such registers can cause harm to innocent people who just are unlucky enough to share a name with someone who committed a crime.
In this age of indefinite record keeping, we need protections for citizens to prevent abuse of our identities, but we must also reexamine when data should be recorded and made public. We also need a procedure backed by the force of law to notify citizens when their names are being sullied by being passed around on various law enforcement databases so that innocent citizens may make corrections to the records.
We are truly living in an Orwellian nightmare and the best of intentions to protect our Sally Soccermoms can be turned to nefarious purposes against the whole of society, or just to political enemies of whoever holds power at the time.
